Vintage Victorian 9kt Gold Heart Padlock
c. 1912
“No beauty shines greater than that of a good heart.” I don’t know who said it, but they are totally on to something. And what’s good, if not a monogrammed and dated gold heart padlock from the early 20th century?
What We Love About It:
Vintage Victorian 9kt Gold Heart Padlock
I’ve had a few of these in the store before and I love their versatility. There’s a tiny ring at the top, so you can string a neckchain through it and wear it as a pendant. These were often seen as the closer for a curb link bracelet in their heyday. Or you could use it to “lock” a very special box or journal.
The Deets:
This padlock is in some ways very standard and in other ways very unique. It has the requisite latch, which is still in perfect working order (no key, however but it’s currently “unlocked”) and is hallmarked “9ctfull”, which indicates that it’s solid 9kt gold and not plated or filled. It was likely fabricated in the late 1800s’ but here’s where it shifts to unique: it’s engraved “1912” on one side and what I believe to be an “E” and an “R” on the other. The monogram is very “swirly – yes, that’s the technical term – and it could pass for several letters of the alphabet, if you ask me. It measures 1″ x 5/8″ x 1/8” and weighs 3.12g.
Most likely made in the Victorian period but engraved (and possibly gifted to someone) in the Edwardian period, this gold heart padlock is looking for its next chapter. Will it be a part of yours?
