Victorian Pietra Dura and Enamel Bird Brooch – 14kt Yellow Gold (Antique)
There’s a reason that the saying, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” is so popular. Having a bird in the hand is no easy feat. Having one on your shoulder (or lapel) may be even trickier. Unless you have a Pietra Dura Bird Brooch. Then it’s easy peasy.
What We Love About It:
This Victorian brooch is made of precious stones, enhanced by enamel applied over the top. We love the vivid colors and the happy little bird with a flower in its mouth they combine to depict.
The brooch is bezel set in 14kt yellow gold and is made up of onyx, malachite and lapis, carnelian and other semi-precious stones, that have been enhanced by enamel over the tops (to show feathers, for example). The piece is well matched and well made and has a primitive pin stem, consistent with the time period, on the back. The brooch measures 1.75″ wide and 1.25″ in height and weighs 17.71g inclusive.
We love this little bird and while we don’t know exactly what he/she is, we love that we can simply hold it in the palm of our hand. Or wherever we choose.
