Victorian Sterling Silver Czech Bohemian Garnet Brooch/Pendant (Vintage)
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Bohemia. Way before broomstick skirts and free thinking, this Bohemia was a part of the Holy Roman Empire and Western Central Europe. This land was known for many things, but one of them was gorgeous garnet jewelry. Since this land encompassed what is now the Czech Republic you’ll also see these garnet pieces referred to as Czech garnets. They are garnets of exceptional clarity and often set very distinctively – with the culet facing outwards. Case in point – our Bohemian Garnet brooch/pendant.
What We Love About It:
Bohemian garnets are always deep and wine colored. But we love the rose cuts set “upside down” to create a unique look. Many of these pieces, this one included, brings to mind the center of a pomegranate. And we love jewelry that makes us think of wine and/or food.
The Deets:
The brooch, consisting of rose-cut garnets of varying sizes between .5mm and 1.5mm. set in collet settings, is set in Sterling Silver and measures 40mm across by 36mm tall. It functions as a brooch with a simple pin stem on the back and also as a necklace, with an articulating bail also to the reverse. The piece weighs in at 11.3g.
We think this is a stunning piece not just for someone born in January (garnet is the birthstone) but for anyone with an appreciation for wine. Or food. Or Central Europe. So basically…. everyone.
