Description
Sterling Silver Georgian Repoussé Bracelet (Antique)
c. 1810 – 1820
re·pous·sé. /rəˌpo͞oˈsā/ adjective 1. (of metalwork) hammered into relief from the reverse side. “a charming sterling silver bowl with repoussé motifs” noun 1. repoussé metalwork.
I took Spanish in high school, so even with Mr. Webster’s help, I still manage to bungle the pronunciation of repoussé (this particular type of metal work). What’s even more unfathomable to me than me ever saying it correctly, is all of the work in this bracelet was hand chased – meaning, someone took hand tools and manipulated the sliver from the reverse side to make the patterns you see here. And then beyond that? Well, keep reading.
What We Love About It:
This repoussé bracelet is truly an artisanal work of art. And the fact that it’s over 200 years old is mind-boggling. There is no damage to the piece; it’s in perfect condition. And the naturalist butterfly and floral motifs make me long for Spring days.
The Deets:
The bracelet was created in our estimation between 1810 and 1820 with six sterling silver plaques of “butterfly shaped beadwork in the “Naturalism – Romantic Movement” style. Between the six plaques you’ll find five chad and engraved floral spacers, and it’s finished off with a box style clasp, that is also deeply chased with roses, vines and leaf motifs. It measures 1.75″ wide and 6.67″ long.
I’m pretty sure this one won’t last long, as it would make an amazing gift to mark any kind of special occasions. Even if it’s a gift to yourself.
