Description
Retro 9ct Yellow Gold Blue John Ring (Vintage)
One of the things we love about vintage jewelry is that it is often unique, due to the labor intensive manufacturing processes of long ago. It was hard to make multiples of something – things were made by hand and not mass-produced. We love finding unique pieces that are one of a kind for other reasons too. Like our Blue John Ring. It’s not a terribly old piece, but you won’t see another just like it. That’s just how it goes with Blue John, which is a mineral only found in one specific area of the UK.
What We Love About It: We are fascinated by the color play and the banding of the stone. Blue John is technically a form of fluorite and has been mined since the 19th century for its ornamental value. This particular piece is banded with streaks of deep purple.
The Deets: The ring has a large cabochon cut slice of Blue John set in a 9ct yellow gold bezel setting, with a delicate rope-like detailed edge. The gold has a silver-ish cast to it, making it appear not quite yellow gold and not quite white gold. There are the typical hallmarks for a piece from the UK on the inside of the shank. The ring weighs in at 8.77g and is currently a size 5.5 US but could be easily sized up or down by our jeweler (see options and pricing here in the listing) or by yours. The ring measures approx 1.25″ from top to bottom and .75″ across.
If you’re hoping for something you won’t see on the person walking down the street next to you, this piece is perfect. Be ready to answer all of the questions you’ll get about what it is and where it comes from.
